Choc Chia Not-Really-Mousse Mousse

I have heard lots of good stuff about raw chia seeds but no-one could show me how to use them in cooking. This recipe was the clincher for me… only 4 ingredients with 2 preparation steps. This is my kind of recipe to make. One of the most simple and tasty birthday party foods for kids!

The Taste Testers

My two boys and their friends love the taste of the mousse and asked for more. The mousse has the beauty of looking like chocolate without the sweet taste. The chocolately goodness is actually sugar free drinking chocolate, which makes it even more perfect for a children’s party. A treat without the sugar!

Grown ups describe the taste as similar to a Coconut Rough. Some of the chia seeds swell slightly within the liquid which gives you a simultaneous smooth and crunchy tasting experience.

Simple Party Food

Preparation This recipe is ideal to prepare the day before your party. Keep it in the fridge until you are ready. Too much warm temperature and the mousse loses it’s firmness.

Portion Sizes Divide into individual small glasses for a perfect child-sized portion. Add these lovely wooden spoons. Done.

Allergy Awareness

Always check individual brands for particular allergy needs. I think this recipe falls neatly into being allergy friendly:

  • Gluten free
  • Nut Free
  • Dairy Free
  • Sugar Free
  • 100% Taste

Choc Chia Mousse Recipe

400ml Coconut Cream

2/3 cup sugar-free drinking chocolate

2/3 cup white chia seeds

2 tbsp rice malt syrup

Choc Chia Not Really Mousse Mousse

Whisk coconut cream, drinking chocolate,  and syrup in a bowl to combine.

Spoon evenly into small glasses.

Cover and chill for at least 1 hour to set.

Serve as is or with yoghurt and strawberries. Yum!

…and it’s not really a mousse, because they are typically made with cream, egg white and lots of air.
